INTENSIVE GENERAL ENGLISH

6 levels from Starter to Advanced.

STAGE ONE AND STAGE TWO COURSES

All IMEA INTENSIVE GENERAL ENGLISH courses are presented as either STAGE ONE or STAGE TWO courses:

  • STAGE ONE courses (Starter, Elementary, Pre-intermediate levels) have ONE THIRD foreign teacher component.
  • STAGE TWO courses (Intermediate, Upper-intermediate, Advanced levels) have TWO THIRDS foreign teacher component.

COMMON EUROPEAN FRAMEWORK OF REFERENCE (CEFR)

All IMEA INTENSIVE GENERAL ENGLISH courses are aligned to the “Common European Framework of Reference” (CEFR) which is the International benchmark defining levels and standards of achievement and competence in English learning.

What is the CEF? The CEF is a guideline created by the Council of Europe which grades language proficiency in any language. It is the official means of describing learner achievements in schools, universities and language institutes across Europe. The CEF provides six reference levels from A1 to C2, breaking down language ability in terms of reading, listening, speaking and writing at each level.

These CEFR descriptors form the core of IMEA’s Intensive General English syllabus at all levels and are used to assess when a student is ready to move to the next level of study.

imea uses ALTE “Can do statements” – Competency Based Assessment.

The IMEA syllabus also incorporates the "can-do statements" developed by the Association of Language Testers in Europe, otherwise known as ALTE. These simplified set of statements provide over 400 descriptors for language examinations which relate to the Common Reference Levels (CEFR). They state clearly and simply the competencies students are expected to achieve before progressing to the next level.

Our core curriculum is enhanced by including a number of syllabus extras.

IMEA EXTENSION ACTIVITIES

All IMEA INTENSIVE GENERAL ENGLISH courses are uniquely designed to create the very best English learning opportunities and outcomes. During course-work lessons, our students learn English in a variety of “real-life” and authentic contexts to improve communicative confidence in all areas.

Apart from regular coursework, extra curriculum time is allocated for all students to undertake a number of required extension activities. Extra extension activities include daily student speaking presentations, formal writing skills practice and the compilation of an English Portfolio:

Daily student speaking presentations. Each lesson a rostered student delivers a spoken presentation relating to cultural awareness, understanding or difference. A short question and answer session follows each presentation.

Formal writing skills practice. Each student is required to complete a prescribed number of written assignment during each course. Assignments are issued, with due dates, at the beginning of each course. Students complete them in their own time at home and results are tallied and count towards the final assessment result for the writing skill. Students can also use our online writing facility – imeawriting@gmail.com.

English Portfolio (EP): Provides opportunities for students to improve cultural awareness, knowledge and understanding. Students reflect on their progress through self-assessment activities. Students chart and track the progress of their learning during the course.

Learning to Learn (L2L): Provides Life Skills and problem solving strategies which can be applied to academic study as well as personal issues and real life challenges.

IMEA CONTINUOUS ASSESSMENT

All IMEA INTENSIVE GENERAL ENGLISH courses adhere to a policy of “continuous assessment”.  These include a series of mini-tests at completion of each module or unit, competency based assessment, peer assessment and TWO full (four skill) examinations, with written progress reports at Mid-course and End-of-level. Teachers provide on-going structured feedback and counselling about students’ study performance and progress.

IMEA COURSE BOOKS

The English series, New Cutting Edge was chosen as the CORE course book for IMEA INTENSIVE GENERAL ENGLISH curriculum because of its compatibility with the CEFR. The workbook is the perfect accompaniment, allowing students to practise what they learn in class and providing an opportunity for extension on various tasks through additional activities.
